Indiana GOP Sen. Dick Lugar said on Friday that he will join the University of Indianapolis as a distinguished professor ? and the university will establish an academy to host symposia and other activities in his honor.

Lugar, who was defeated in the May GOP primary by Indiana Treasurer Richard Mourdock, will join the Department of History and Political Science, The Hill reports. Mourdock lost at the general electioin to Democrat Joe Donnelly.

In addition, the Richard G. Lugar Academy will also host speaking events.

The outgoing 80-year-old senator also will lecture in Indianapolis and in Washington under programs sponsored by the university.

"I look forward to sharing experiences and helping to shape student careers that will bring satisfaction to each student and a tremendous boost to progress in Indiana and the nation," Lugar said in a statement.

Lugar served as a university trustee when he was the mayor of Indianapolis and taught political science in 1976 while running for the Senate, The Hill reports.

"We couldn?t be more pleased that Sen. Lugar has selected UIndy as a home for his important post-Senate work," University of Indianapolis President Robert Manuel said in the statement. "It?s difficult to imagine another individual with such a wealth of experience and such a willingness to share it with young people.

?With his help, we can provide an unparalleled opportunity for students pursuing careers in public service," Manuel said, according to The Hill.
