Strasburg sharp vs. Braves

Associated Press Sports

updated 7:22 p.m. ET June 2, 2012

WASHINGTON (AP) - Even though Stephen Strasburg is on a three-game winning streak, his most recent starts hadn't been especially smooth. On Saturday, he threw freely and easily, pitching four-hit ball for seven sharp innings to help lead the Washington Nationals over the Atlanta Braves 2-0.

Strasburg (6-1) completed seven shutout innings for the first time in his major league career. He opened the game with a flourish, striking out the first four Braves batters.

Strasburg struck out nine, walked none and threw 90 pitches. Twice he gave up singles and then induced double-play grounders.

The right-hander allowed multiple baserunners just once - in the third when Jose Constanza doubled and Michael Bourn singled with one out.

"I just expected a little bit too much out of myself and it was kind of getting me away from what I was trying to do, what I wanted to do out there. Today was huge for me to go out there and keep it simple," Strasburg said.

In his last two starts, both wins, he was pulled after five innings, but Strasburg was so economical with this pitches that manager Davey Johnson thought he could have gone longer.

"He had another inning or two in him," Johnson said.

Less than two years removed from Tommy John surgery, Strasburg is on a strict innings limit, and Johnson is cutting them when he can.

Strasburg would have liked to pitch longer.

"I felt like I was getting stronger as the game went on, so it's tough, but it's his call," Strasburg said.

"He's back. I don't think he ever left. In his mind, he left," Johnson said.

Atlanta second baseman Dan Uggla struck out twice and grounded into a double play against Strasburg. In his previous at-bats against him, Uggla was 6 for 8 with two home runs and seven RBIs.

"He was electric. He's always electric, but today he was hitting his spots, had his curve ball going, his changeup was nasty," Uggla said.

Johnson said he heard Uggla grousing about Strasburg's stuff, but he couldn't repeat what he said.

"It was obvious he wasn't going to give him anything today," Johnson said.

Sean Burnett gave up two singles in a scoreless eighth and Tyler Clippard pitched a perfect ninth for his fourth save in fifth chances.

Brandon Beachy (5-4) allowed just three hits in 6 1-3 innings. He has lost three straight decisions and Atlanta has dropped nine of 11.

"Can't make mistakes in a game like that and I made far too many of them. I put people on and they're going to score," Beachy said.

"I just wasn't locating my fastball again today which leads to me throwing way too many pitches. Bad things happen.

The game was scoreless when Jesus Flores led off the fifth by hitting a drive into the left-field bullpen for his second home run of the year.

In the seventh, Beachy was pulled with one out after Danny Espinosa walked. Espinosa stole second and Chad Durbin walked Flores.

Both runners moved up on a wild pitch from Jonny Venters that hit catcher Brian McCann, forcing him to leave with a bruise near his left knee. McCann said he had to leave because he couldn't get down on his knees.

Espinosa scored on pinch-hitter Xavier Nady's double to right.

NOTES: McCann was replaced at catcher by David Ross, who hadn't played since May 25 with a strained right groin. .... Washington RF Michael Morse made his season debut after missing nearly the first two months of the season with a strained back muscle. He grounded out to short in all four at-bats. ... Johnson said that C Wilson Ramos would miss the rest of the season because doctors were unable to repair his torn anterior cruciate ligament and torn meniscus at the same time. When doctors repaired the meniscus, they thought the ligament needed time to heal and the ACL surgery will have to wait. ... Washington RHP Brad Lidge (sports hernia) says he'll have three rehab appearances next week for Class A Potomac. ... Atlanta SS Andrelton Simmons made his major league debut. He was 0 for 3. ... Braves RHP Tommy Hanson (5-4, 3.84) will pitch against Nationals LHP Gio Gonzalez (7-1, 2.04) on Sunday.

"Flame" malware greatly expands the scope of cyber warfare

The discovery of a new species of highly sophisticated malware earlier this week adds another puzzle piece to the contemporary cyberwar battleground.?Flame, as it?s called, is a whopper of a program?20 megabytes, the size of a video file, and 40 times bigger than the Stuxnet virus that took down Iranium centrifuges back in 2010.? But Flame is not just another cyber weapon?it could greatly expand the scope of nations capable of carrying out cyberattacks.

Flame bears many similarities to Stuxnet. Both are specimens of highly advanced programming and detailed expertise in many specialized areas. Both programs are the products of large teams of experts working hundreds of hours on development and testing. Only a handful of nations have the technical capacity to do this kind of work. The list would include the United States, the UK, Germany, China, Russia, Israel and Taiwan, says Scott Borg, head of U.S. Cyber Consequences Unit, a security consulting firm.

But Flame differs from Stuxnet in many important respects. Whereas Stuxnet was designed for a specific purpose?infiltrating and destroying the centrifuges used in Iran?s nuclear fuel enrichment facility at Natanz?Flame appears to be a general purpose tool for espionage. It has a broad ability to gather data from screenshots or through Bluetooth connections with other devices.? Once Flame makes it onto a computer, it begins ?sniffing the network traffic, taking screenshots, recording audio conversations, intercepting the keyboard, and so on,? says a May 28 report by security firm Kaspersky.?It can compress and encrypt the information it captures and hold onto it until it has a reliable Internet connection to send it?Flame was apparently?targeted to countries in the Middle East?it was showed up mainly in Iran, with infections also in Israel, the Palestinian territories, Sudan and?Syria.

Perhaps the biggest potential problem ?is that the programmers who designed Flame did not try and disguise the code in a way that makes it difficult to reverse engineer. The practice, known as ?code obfuscation,? is common among commercial software developers as a way to keep competitors from being able to figure out how software products are designed. Flame programmers apparently didn?t take such measures, which means a knowledgeable programmer wouldn?t have too much trouble extracting the pertinent design of Flame and making use of it. Flame, in other words, is a boomerang.

That?s not to say that just anyone can download Flame and start using it, of course. It still requires expertise to understand how the program works. But the lack of code obfuscation adds ?dozens? of states to the list of those capable of carrying out sophisticated cyber attacks, says Borg. That may very well include Iran, whose programmers almost certainly are studying the malware as we speak. The failure to protect the Flame code from being reverse engineered may turn out to have been a monumental error.

Who designed Flame isn?t clear. ?David Sanger?s article in today?s New York Times confirms that Stuxnet was authored by the United States. Indeed, a clear pattern of U.S. offensive cyber warfare has been taking shape in recent years. In December, a security expert asserted that the Conficker worm, which has infiltrated millions of ordinary PCs over many years, could have served as a ?door kicker? for Stuxnet?a program that went out into the field and set the stage for the Stuxnet invasion. At this point, there isn?t enough information about Flame to know who authored it.? It?s safe to assume, however, that the cyber battlefield is about to get more crowded.

ed note: Stuxnet code was not protected against reverse engineering, either, but this is less of a problem because its purpose is narrow and hence the programming is less useful as a weapon than the more general-purpose Flame. This post was corrected to reflect this.

Hurricane season looks to be near-normal this year

Several factors are contributing to the near-normal hurricane outlook. Among them, sea-surface temperatures in regions where the Atlantic's tropical cyclones form, and conditions in the tropical Pacific that have an extended influence over weather patterns elsewhere.

By Pete Spotts,?Staff writer / June 2, 2012

Janet Napolitano, Secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security talked at the National Hurricane Center in Miami during a news conference kicking off the first day of the hurricane season Friday. At her right is Craig Fugate, Administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency. While not officially beginning until June 1, the season has already seen two named storms.

That's the outlook from several groups who produce seasonal forecasts for the Atlantic hurricane season, which began Friday.

Here's a sampler:

? The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration anticipates a 70 percent chance that from nine to 15 storms will reach tropical-storm status and earn names. Between four and eight will become hurricanes. Of those, from one to three are expected to become major hurricanes, where maximum sustained winds top 111 miles an hour.

? At Colorado State University, where atmospheric scientist William Gray pioneered seasonal tropical cyclone forecasts, he and colleague Philip Klotzbach anticipate 13 named storms, five hurricanes, and two major hurricanes.

? Researchers at Florida State University give the season a 70 percent chance of producing 10 to 16 named storms, and from five to nine hurricanes.

? Tropical Storm Risk.com, a consortium of scientists and insurance-industry specialists based in Britain, is anticipating (in round numbers) 13 tropical storms, six hurricanes, and three major hurricanes.

The average between 1981 and 2010, the base period federal forecasters now use for determining above- or below-normal conditions, is 12 named storms a year, of which half reach hurricane status.

Several factors are contributing to the near-normal outlook. Among them, sea-surface temperatures in regions where the Atlantic's tropical cyclones form, and conditions in the tropical Pacific that have an extended influence over weather patterns elsewhere.

Tropical cyclones form over and feed off of warm surface waters. And while still warm by snow-bird standards, waters across the tropical Atlantic from Africa to Central America have posted their third-coolest May readings since 1995, when the current, relatively intense long-term period of tropical-cyclone activity began, notes Jeff Masters, a meteorologist and co-founder of the website Weather Underground. Sea surface temperatures are running only about a half a degree Fahrenheit above normal, suggesting that it may take longer for waters to warm enough to fuel tropical cyclones.

But he also points to a broad patch of unusually warm water running up the East Coast from Virginia through southern New England. There, average surface temperatures are running up to 7 degrees or more Fahrenheit above normal ? perhaps setting the stage for sustaining or intensifying the strength of any hurricane that travels up the eastern seaboard.

First available 4K movie would look great on the world?s first home 4K projector

Move over, HD: 4K is the new hotness in townWhen one says high-definition display, you probably still think 720p or 1080p. But there's another contender that delivers even crisper, clearer, and more life-like images: 4K displays, which have four times the resolution of 1080p screens. This fairly new technology hasn't yet caught on, and 4K hardware and content are only barely starting to pop up. Take for example Sony's first 4K home theater projector ? announced last year and showcased at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), it's now available for purchase by anyone willing to plunk down $26,000 for it.

Tecca had some eyes-on time with the technology at CES, and in a side-by-side comparison with a 1080p display, we can say 4K comes out on top. On a small screen, however, 4K doesn't make a difference. The bigger the screen is, the more you'll appreciate this pixel-rich display technology, and the resolution shines even more when the images and videos are projected at large viewing size.

Sony's first 4k Home Movie Projector
Right now, though, high-definition content that can take advantage of 4K displays are quite rare. Peter Jackson made a splash by filming The Hobbit in 5K resolution?? the film was criticized for being too life-like?? but it will take a while before you can get a copy of it for a home screening with family and friends.

YouTube has 4K viewing enabled, but every clip will take a while for you to load because files are obviously huge, similar to the size of TimeScapes: the first 4K movie you can download. TimeScapes, a timelapse cinematography of the American South West, is available in 1080p format on iTunes and 1440p format on?its website. But if you happen to have a 4K TV or if the $26,000 Sony projector is within your budget, you can also get it in 4K format for $299.95 sent to you as a 140GB file saved on a portable hard drive.
