Jive Hosted PBX

Jive Hosted VoIP is an easy-to-use hosted voice-over-IP system for small businesses. The premise is simple. Plug in the phones to the Internet, configure the system via a Web portal, and voil?! your full-blown VoIP system is up and running. Jive offers SMBs all the basic calling features along with a few advanced options, such as conference numbers and virtual fax services?all in an easy-to-use package.

Traditionally, IP PBX systems were on-premise products, with an on-site appliance?or software that needs to be installed onto a dedicated server. Jive offers businesses an alternative: why bother with an appliance when you can go to the cloud? Jive offers IP PBX as a service; administrators just need to register for an account and configure the features they need.

When it comes to pricing, Jive offers five tiers, depending on the number of users on the system. Tier 1, at $29.95 per user per month, is for organizations with one to four users. Tier 2, for five to nine users, costs $25.95 per user per month. Tier 3 is $23.95 per user per month for 10 to 24 users, and Tier 4 is $21.95 per user per month for 25 to 49 users. Organizations with more than 50 users are in Tier 5, at $19.95 per user per month. Each plan offers unlimited calling minutes, necessary toll-free and local numbers, and an online fax service.

Getting Started is a Snap
Registration for Jive Communications is quick, and the company works closely with potential customers to get them set up and started. After signing up, I got the relevant paperwork via email, including a request to port over an existing phone number, add new numbers, and a quote sheet with complete payment information. Once my account was up and running, I received a fulfillment notice from Jive with the relevant information.

I could transfer an existing phone number, request a toll-free number, and request individual numbers for each user. Once the account is active, I could create extensions, assign groups, define call queues, set up call attendant, and a whole lot of other things, on the Web interface even if I hadn't set up the phones yet. The auto-attendant is the automated message customers hear when they first call the company number, and then I created rules for call forwarding, voice mail storage, call routing, and call blocking, among others.

Once the system was ready, I was encouraged to schedule a "setup" call with Jive's support team. This is part user training and tech support, and at first I was inclined to skip it altogether. I'm glad I went through the process, though, because Jive's on-boarding process is very thorough. We talked about different user case scenarios and types of features I should consider, given my environment. The support staff was knowledgeable, and customers who are coming on board with limited telephony expertise will appreciate the time Jive dedicates to teaching about its system. Even fairly savvy administrators will find the process helpful as they tweak new calling rules during this process.

Like RingCentral, Jive offers phones that have the proper software already installed, making it a matter of just plugging it in, letting the cloud service detect the IP address, and assigning the rest of the configuration settings on the phone. I tried using phones I already had to see how that process worked, and discovered that the phones I had were too old to be supported. The interface for this bit of setup is very straightforward, as I just had to find the model in a drop down box, and then associate it with an extension I had already created. The system would have taken care of the rest. Jive's support team also provided me with very detailed step-by-step instructions for specific brands so that there is no guesswork for the user.

The amount of Web tutorials, PDF cheat-sheets, videos, and the reference documentation available as a Wiki can be a little overwhelming, but there really is an answer to every question the user may have.

As with RingCentral, businesses who are switching to hosted PBX from other services or from an on-premise platform should just go with the pre-configured phones directly from the company. While it's possible to go through the interface and set up (supported) devices manually for each user, it would get tedious pretty quickly when the system could be doing all of this automatically. Just toss the older phones on eBay or recycle them and buy the pre-configured phones.

The Administrator Interface
The interface is well-designed and responsive, but it looks a little dated compared to RingCentral and other Web-based properties. The pages are not dynamic, so you need to refresh the page manually or switch to a different section and come back to see new values or changes. Considering how easy it was to get around the site, it's a minor quibble, but one that makes it look different from other services.

The interface's URL has the actual company name included, which is a nice personalized touch.

There were three tabs on my interface?Home, Reports, and Admin. Home appears be just a list of all the objects in the system, such as individual extensions as well as all the calling groups I've created. I can just call those extensions from here. Basic users would see only the Home tab. For administrators, the Report dashboard provides a wealth of information, such as total amount of minutes used and number of calls made. I could also drill down to look at activity by phone number or extension, and even compare call volumes by day. It's also a matter of simply clicking on the extension to view or download the full call logs, complete with numbers called and duration of each call. While there are a ton of reports available, there wasn't a way to modify the graphs on the dashboard to customize that view.

All the actual configuration options are under the Admin tab. I could create users first, and then assign available devices. I could use the "Combo Wizard" which would allow me to enter the phone information and associated it with a new user all at once, but the general process was to create all the users, and then later go and assign the devices. The fact that the page didn't refresh or change in any way really made it tricky to tell when I had hit Save and when I hadn't. It was easy to forget I hadn't hit save and go to a different part of the interface and lose my settings.

Jive Hosted PBX allowed me to set up call rules such as ringing all the phones in a group simultaneously, or setting up a hierarchy to sequentially ring different numbers until someone finally picked up. I was able to have my personal cell phone ring if someone called the correct extension.

I wasn't wild about the fact that if I wanted to enable call recording, I have to set up a separate storage space. As of this time, Jive requires businesses to set up an Amazon Secure Simple Storage (S3) account and provide the Amazon Web Services access code in order to set up remote storage. All calls using Call Recording will be stored in the Amazon cloud account. I can see why Jive is staying out of the storage business, but this feature is very limited at this point, and call recording is a fairly basic feature.

Microsoft Launches Updated Office 365 For Business, Adds ProPlus ...

officeballmerA month after launching its subscription-based Office 365 Home Premium for individuals, Microsoft today launched a major update to Office 365 for business users. Just like in its previous incarnation, Office 365 for Business will feature cloud-based online versions of Exchange, SharePoint and Lync, as well as all of the standard Office web applications like Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote (and InfoPath, Access, Active Directory integration and other tools, depending on the version you subscribe to).

Starting with today?s update, Microsoft will also offer a set of new versions of Office for small and midsize businesses. In addition, Microsoft now offers the Office 365 ProPlus package, which offers business users the full versions of the standard Office apps as a service for up to five devices at $144 per user per year (including a set of management tools for IT departments).

The number of small- and medium-sized businesses using Office 365 has grown by 150 percent in the past 12 months.

The new ProPlus packages is also included in Microsoft?s Office 365 Enterprise offerings and the new Office 365 Midsize Business package. This new Midsize Business version is meant for businesses with between ten and 250 employees. As Microsoft?s general manager for its Office Division Kirk Gregerson told me earlier this week, most of these businesses don?t always have IT departments and if they do, they typically only have an IT generalist on staff. Because of this, the Midsize Business edition comes with simplified IT tools that take away a great deal of the complexity of managing all of these users. It also comes with Active Directory integration and business hours phone support. The price for this version is $180 per user for an annual subscription.

For smaller businesses with one to ten users, Microsoft is now offering a new plan for $150 per user per year that mostly focuses on email, calendaring video conferencing and website tools.

Yammer, which Microsoft acquired last year, is now part of the Office 365 for Enterprise edition, but Gregerson noted that the company isn?t making any specific announcements about how and if it plans to add the service to other versions as well.

According to Microsoft, Office 365 is ?one of the fastest growing businesses in Microsoft history. After only 18 months, one in five of Microsoft?s enterprise customers now has the paid service, up from one in seven a year ago.? Among small and medium businesses, Office 365 is also getting traction and the number of companies using it increased 150% in the past 12 months. The Hamburg Port Authority, the City of Chicago, Meals on Wheels, Toyota, beauty retailer Sephora and Sweden-based property development company Midroc Europe just switched to Office 365, for example.

The new version of Office 365 for businesses is now available in 69 markets and 17 languages. It will launch in an additional 20 markets and 16 languages in the second quarter of this year.

Here is how Microsoft describes these new version of Office 365:

Office 365 ProPlus ? Office 365 ProPlus includes the latest and most complete set of fully featured, rich Office applications delivered as a service: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Outlook, Publisher, InfoPath, Access and Lync. It works on up to five devices, including Windows-based tablets and PCs. People can now simply sign in to Office 365 from any of their devices, and their documents and personalized settings roam with them, allowing them to quickly pick up right where they left off. IT departments also get the controls they need including the ability to run Office 365 ProPlus side-by-side with other versions of Office, and tools to streamline and manage updates for their users. Office 365 ProPlus is available as a standalone offering for $144 per user per year or is included with the updated premium Office 365 Enterprise offerings and the new Office 365 Midsize Business.

Office 365 Midsize Business ? designed for medium-sized businesses with 10 to 250 employees. This service includes Office 365 ProPlus and provides midsize businesses with enterprise-quality communication and collaboration with Exchange Online, Lync Online and SharePoint Online ? along with the simplified IT tools they need to maintain control while reducing complexity. Active Directory integration, a web-based administration console and business hours phone support are also included. Pricing is $180 per user for an annual subscription, the equivalent of $15 per user per month.

Office 365 Small Business Premium ? designed for small businesses with 1 to 10 employees. In addition to the complete set of rich Office applications, this service includes business grade email, shared calendars, website tools and HD video conferencing in an easy to manage service that doesn?t require IT expertise. Pricing is $150 per user for an annual subscription, the equivalent of $12.50 per user per month.

Researchers marvel at world's deepest sea vents

KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) ? Researchers using a remote-controlled submarine around the world's deepest known hydrothermal vents have been collecting samples from the sunless depths of the Caribbean Sea.

The expedition of Britain's National Oceanography Center is exploring areas where blazing hot, mineral-rich fluid gushes from volcanic chimneys on the seabed. The deepest areas are more than 3 miles (5 kilometers) below the sea's surface between the Cayman Islands and Jamaica.

Chief scientist Jon Copley says he believes laboratory analysis in coming weeks will reveal some new life forms that have evolved in the remote areas. In a Wednesday email from a research boat, Copley said these include bristle worms, a sea anemone and some small crustaceans.

The team was hailed in 2010 for discovering the deepest known volcanic vent field in the Cayman Trough.

Roccat Apuri

The world of gaming peripherals is filled with specialized devices and niche products, but even among the diverse, the Roccat Apuri is unusual. It's a USB hub! It's a cord bungee! It's both! At this point, a few readers are probably scratching their heads. But don't discount a product just because it looks different or has a funny name?it's a surprisingly useful device, both for gamers and neat-freaks.

Mouse Cord Bungee
What is a cord bungee? I'm glad you asked. A mouse cord bungee is a cable management device, with a small arm to hold the cable from your wired mouse up and out of the way. This helps prevent the tangle that results when a mouse with a four-foot cable is used 10 inches from the USB port it's connected to. It also has the benefit of reducing any drag or friction from the cable, letting you move unhindered. Perhaps most importantly, it helps tame the snarl of cables that accumulate around any gaming rig, not only by getting your mouse cable out of the way, but because the design and extra hub functionality also help reduce clutter.

It's not necessarily a device that everyone will need, but after a week of testing?both at work and at play?it became obvious that even outside of gaming, a bungee can be useful to anyone who does a lot of work with a wired mouse.

Like other bungees, the Apuri does have a springy cord boom coming up over the top of its three-legged base. Unlike other spring-loaded models, however, this design uses black rubber for both the boom arm and the cord channel, giving you a secure spot for your cord and accommodating irregular cable thickness and sheathing.

USB Hub
While most cord bungee devices are little more than a spring-loaded arm with cable clips, Roccat has added real functionality by outfitting the base of the Apuri with a 4-port USB hub, similar in function to the Satechi Ultra Portable 4 Port USB Pocket Hub. The $39.99 price tag is similar to that of the Targus Ultralife USB Hub, but the Targus hub includes an Ethernet port. Plain USB 2.0 ports are often much cheaper, like the aforementioned Satechi Pocket Hub.

Like other hubs, the Apuri turns one USB port into many, splitting off into four separate ports. That's four times the devices, four times the accessibility, four fewer reasons to reach in back of your PC tower to plug something in for an hour, four slightly easier connections to disconnect or reconnect from a laptop. And, for applications that need a bit more juice, such as charging a smartphone, or powering several devices at once, the hub also comes with an AC adapter.

The hub is a plug-and-play device, so there are no additional drivers to install, and the hub should be compatible with any current USB port. It's OS-agnostic, compatible with Windows (XP/Vista/Windows 7/Windows 8), Mac (OS X), and Linux. The hub offers USB 2.0 connectivity, but not USB 3.0?for that, you'll need something like the Satechi 3.0 4-Port USB Hub. Roccat covers the Apuri with a one-year warranty.

Design
The Apuri sits on a base of three wide rubber feet. Between those feet and the Apuri's weight?4.2 ounces, or roughly a third of a pound?the device should stay relatively stationary, even through the wild mousing of a frantic firefight.

Measuring 5.1 by 2.5 by 2.5 inches (HWD), the hub will take up a bit of space on your desk, but the raised tripod design also allows cords to pass underneath it, providing another potential element of cable management. And, with two five-foot cables (USB and power, respectively) you can connect the Apuri to your PC, and multiple devices to the Apuri, letting you relocate some of your cable mess to one central location. And, if you just want the cool lighted USB hub on your desk, the bungee arm is removable.

The base of the Apuri is black plastic with a matte finish, accented with glowing blue LEDs. It will definitely blend in when set next to a gaming rig, gaming keyboard, and gaming mouse?glowing accents and backlight are pretty common in gaming gear. Sadly, the LED color is not adjustable, nor can it be turned off. As a result, this probably won't be so inconspicuous on a regular desk.

While it may not be quite like anything else we've reviewed, the Roccat Apuri is two helpful devices in one: a mouse cord bungee, and a 4-port USB hub. Either one would be helpful, but combining the two into the Apuri's solid tripod design makes it a niche product that could be pretty helpful beyond the narrower gamer market.

COMPARISON TABLE
Compare the Roccat Apuri with several other USB devices side by side.

Neustar | Benefits of Open Source Software Development | Neustar

selenium image 150x144 Technical and Marketing Benefits of Open Source Software (OSS)Is open source software development a useful strategy for business? That is an issue that is constantly being debated in online forums across the Internet.

While there are some negative perspectives that either stem from a lack of adequate documentation or the proliferation of licenses that complicate the legal uses, there are many successful open source projects that have large communities of both developer and commercial support. I believe that when there is a solid technical fit between the features and the project?s requirements?, building on top of an open source software solution is advantageous.

Engineers interested in open source software development for the web performance community may want to consider turning to Selenium, which is a browser automation toolkit licensed under the Apache 2.0 License (a free software license).? Many companies, such as Google, have implemented Selenium for their own internal use, while others have made commercial products and services based on Selenium (e.g. SauceLabs). In my opinion, the strong corporate support from Google makes Selenium unique in the open source software space, and gives it a leg up on the competition.

I have been following the Selenium community for about five years ? following Neustar?s acquisition of BrowserMob, which uses Selenium as one of its core technologies.

Marketing Open Source Software

Given the strong community of support open source software enjoys, quality open source software projects can garner a significant amount of attention.? For example, creative use of open source software can help position your organization as a thought leader, opening up opportunities to present at conferences and meet-ups.? Moreover, this is a community where well-respected community members often cite successful open source software project implementation in their own discussions and community outreach.? This third-party validation can prove useful to your organization ? and your marketing department.

Giving Back to the Community

Given that one of the biggest challenges to open source software projects is maintaining the momentum and participation of the community, it is important to contribute and give back.? This could include donating documentation or patches, preserving the original application programming interfaces and maintaining core functionality. ? Tools like GitHub and Bitbucket have proved extremely useful for increasing the collaboration on open source software projects.

In Conclusion

There are many success stories of businesses leveraging open source projects ? it is certainly something to consider when creating a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) solution. Next time you are considering building or revamping your solution, consider the open source software development and the open source software communities and the value they can offer both technically and from a marketing perspective.

Holography helps firefighters see through flames

Firefighters may soon be able to see through flames and find people trapped in burning buildings, according to details of a new holographic imaging technique described Tuesday.

Some fire departments already use infrared cameras to see through smoke, but these cameras use zoom lenses to collect and focus light. The intense infrared radiation emitted by flames can overwhelm the camera sensors and limit their use, the researchers explain.

The new technique developed by Pietro Ferraro at the National Institute of Optics in Italy and his colleagues makes use of a lens-free digital holography technology in the infrared range.

Holography is a means of producing 3-D images of an object using two beams of light: an object beam and a reference beam. The object beam is shone onto the object being imaged. The reflected light is combined with the reference beam to create a pattern that encodes a 3-D image.

In the new technique described in the journal Optics Express, a beam of infrared laser light is widely dispersed throughout a smoke-and-flame-filled room. A holographic imager records the reflected light and decodes it to reveal what lies behind the inferno.

"The result is a live, 3-D movie of the room and its contents," the Optical Society, which publishes the journal, notes in a news release. "The next step to moving this technology to the field is to develop a portable tripod-based system that houses both the laser source and the IR camera."

Two NYC men arrested after woman killed, cut up with power saw

By Shimon Prokupecz, NBCNewYork.com

A 23-year-old man and his friend have been arrested in connection with the gruesome killing of his mother, whose body was cut up with a power saw and scattered in bags throughout their Bronx neighborhood, law enforcement officials tell NBC 4 New York.

Both men have admitted to chopping up the body and using a shopping cart to dump the parts along the curb in Morrisania, but each is pointing the finger at the other for killing the mother, 45-year-old Tania Byrd, law enforcement officials said Wednesday.

The initial charges do not include murder. Bahsid McLean, 23, and William Harris, 26, are both charged with unlawful dissection of a human body, among other charges. They were in custody and lawyer information was not immediately available.

Read more at NBCNewYork.com

Law enforcement officials tell NBC 4 New York that the two men tell different stories. The son says he left the apartment he shared with his mother at about 3 a.m. Monday to go to the ATM. When he returned, he has told investigators, his friend had stabbed Byrd to death and threatened to kill him and his 6-year-old brother if he didn't help get rid of the body.

His friend, meanwhile, has told investigators that the son told him he killed his mother, and showed him a photograph of her, dead, asking for his friend's help in disposing of her corpse.

The two suspects agree that they went to a Bronx hardware store to purchase supplies for the job, including a power saw and gloves. Investigators say there are bloodstains at the apartment, and that it appears someone tried to clean up the mess with bleach.

An empty power saw box was also found there. The saw was found at the apartment of the friend's girlfriend, officials said.

Law enforcement officials say the pair cut up the body on Monday night and dumped it around 9:30 p.m. Surveillance camera video shows the son in the apartment building lobby, leaving the elevator with numerous bags, and then video outside the building shows two men wheeling away a shopping cart.

Officials say a man walking his dog along 158th Street in Morrisania early Tuesday morning came upon a plastic bag of what he thought were books. As he moved to open the bag, he noticed a vehicle circling the block and became nervous, so he took the bag around the corner and looked inside, finding two hands and a shoulder.

He sent his son to call police and continued walking the dog. About two blocks away on Eagle Avenue he and the dog came upon a suitcase, and the dog sat down next to it. The man opened the suitcase and found a woman's torso, wearing a bra, according to law enforcement officials.

Responding police found a plastic bag further down Eagle Avenue that contained a leg and a foot, and then nearby on Cauldwell Avenue, they found a black suitcase with a leg and the woman's head.

People who knew Byrd were stunned about the grisly killing.

"Every time you see her, she would have a smile on her face," said neighbor Chastity Agosto. "How could a son do that to his mother?

Qtel banks on Morocco ties in Maroc Telecom bid: CEO

BARCELONA (Reuters) - Qatar Telecom , seeking to complete its North Africa footprint and grow via mobile broadband, said the Gulf country's good rapport with Morocco could give it an edge over other firms bidding for partly state-owned Maroc Telecom .

Qtel Chief Executive Nasser Marafih told Reuters in an interview the kingdom of Morocco, which owns 30 percent of Maroc Telecom, would play a role in picking the winner.

"The political consideration is important, and that is something that still needs to be addressed in the discussions" which will start soon, Marafih said at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

"I think Qatar has a good relationship with Morocco, and Qtel has played an important role in the development of the countries where we are present."

Qtel, which is changing its brand name to Ooredoo - "I want" in Arabic - in all its markets, is 68 percent owned by the state.

It has submitted an initial offer for the 53 percent stake in Maroc Telecom owned by France's Vivendi , which is also being chased by Etisalat , the United Arab Emirates' (UAE) biggest telecoms operator, and KT Corp, Korea's second-biggest telco.

Qtel is being advised by J.P. Morgan on its bid for the stake, which has a market value of about $6 billion. Final bids are expected in mid-March.

Qtel is a highly profitable telecom operator based in the oil-rich Gulf state which has expanded into 16 countries from Indonesia to Algeria in the past decade.

Vivendi, the French media, entertainment and telecoms conglomerate, is looking to sell several assets to cut debt and reduce exposure to the capital-intensive telecoms business.

The buyer for Vivendi's Maroc Telecom stake would also be expected to make a mandatory offer to minority shareholders, further boosting the takeover price.

Vivendi had initially targeted a price of at least 5.5 billion euros ($7.19 billion) but analysts believe that is too high given the unit's weakness and recent growth slowdown.

Marafih declined to comment on Vivendi's asking price or Maroc's market capitalization, saying only that Qtel was doing its own valuation based on its long-term view of the business.

Qtel will not be drawn into a bidding war with Etisalat and KT, he said. "We don't worry about competition in the process because has to make sense for us. We are not afraid to walk away."

Qtel's interest in Morocco comes after it spent about $3.9 billion raising its stakes in subsidiaries in Iraq and Kuwait over the past year.

Marafih said no similar moves were being planned for its Oman subsidiary or its Algerian business, of which it owns 80 percent, although it could one day carry out initial public offering there.

Marafih said the company's strategy was to strengthen its positions in its biggest markets, while focusing on reducing operating costs.

The group is also evaluating the sale of smaller assets, he said, including its Saudi Arabia push-to-talk operator Bravo.

He ruled out exiting Palestine or the Maldives "at this stage", saying they were small but good operations that could be built. ($1 = 0.7649 euros)

National Eating Disorders Awareness Week: 5 Things You Should ...

eating-disorder-anorexia-bulimia

This week is National Eating Disorders Awareness Week, dedicated to raising awareness about anorexia, bulimia, binge-eating disorder, and other conditions that involve preoccupations with food and weight.

Think you know what an eating disorder is all about? You may not.

Research by Oxford University suggests that eating disorders remain poorly understood by the general public and even health professionals.

Sure, some symptoms are obvious?say, weight loss or purging after eating?but others are less so.

In order to identify the sometimes subtle symptoms of an eating disorder and encourage someone to seek help, here are five surprising facts you should know.

It?s not just teens and young women
Many people assume that only teenage and young adult women develop eating disorders?but increasingly, doctors are seeing more and more cases in women and men of all ages, even in children and the middle aged. A recent study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal found a lack of awareness about male eating disorders often prevented diagnosis and treatment?even though men and boys account for about 25% of cases.

?I have started to see a lot more women in their 40s and up who come to me with eating disorders,? says Jodi Rubin, a therapist in New York City and adjunct lecturer at the NYU Silver School of Social Work. Often times, these later-in-life disorders are triggered by a major life change?leaving or re-entering the work force, getting a divorce, or having a baby, for example.

You can?t tell by looking at someone
An eating disorder can be hard to spot: Bulimia and anorexia symptoms traditionally include dramatic weight loss, but it?s also possible to have disordered eating while maintaining a normal body weight, says Rubin. Binge eaters, in fact, may even be overweight, or may repeatedly shed and then pack on pounds.

?Eating disorders are about control and self esteem as much as they are about the number on the scale,? she says. Someone with an eating disorder may work hard to keep their weight at a certain number as to not ?let on? that he or she has a problem, for example.
There are as many emotional symptoms as there are physical
Sure there are plenty of visible cues that someone might have an eating disorder: Along with weight loss, people who severely restrict calories or nutrients may experience thinning hair, dry skin, and?in the case of a purging disorder?swollen cheeks.

But the emotional signs of an eating disorder may be easier to spot, if you know what to look for. At their root, almost all eating disorders are symptoms of depression or self-esteem issues, says Rubin. You may notice that a friend or loved one has become moody, uptight, anxious, or is expressing self-doubt and shame?either about his or her body, or about life in general.

Strange behaviors might be a clue
Newly adopted rituals can also be a sign that a person?s relationship with food has taken an unhealthy turn. A friend may begin to obsessively count calories, focus only on specific foods or food groups, or avoid making spontaneous plans, or stop eating with other people altogether. When you do eat together, he or she may exhibit unusual food behaviors?using a lot of condiments, or fixating on strange food combinations, for example.

For people hyper-focused on their weight and body image, a preoccupation with exercise often goes along with an eating disorder, as well. It?s normal to want to burn off excess calories after a big meal, but if a friend seems to panic after missing one workout, that?s a red flag.

Calling someone out may not help
Many people with eating disorders are in denial about their problem, says Rubin; some are even proud of the control they are able to exert over their bodies. By bringing up food or weight issues you?ve noticed with a friend, he or she may tell you that you?re imagining it, or that there?s nothing to worry about.

Instead, try talking about the emotional issues: ?If you say, ?I?ve noticed you seem depressed lately,? they?re not really able to deny that,? says Rubin. And even if they don?t come clean and agree to seek help then and there, they?ll remember that you?ve expressed concern and that you?re a safe place to go when they?re ready to talk.

HBT: Canseco struggling in Texas Winter League

Jose Canseco is still playing baseball. At least as long as someone pays him an appearance fee to show up. The latest someone: the Texas Winter League, where Canseco?went 3-for-20 in six games in three days down in Harlingen, Texas over the weekend.

Adam Lawson of the Valley Morning Star spent a day in the dugout with Canseco and captured the essence of this Lion in Winter. It?s, predictably, not the prettiest sight.

But you know what? It?s at least real. What?s not real these days: Canseco?s once so-bad-it?s-good Twitter account. It used to quite clearly be Canseco writing things that were at turns funny, at turns sad. Now, much of the time, it is pretty clearly given over to writers who are either being paid to make Canseco a ?character? or else they?re doing it for him pro bono. ?Which, frankly, is sadder than his old real stuff about wanting to play baseball again.

Chris Cooper cast as Green Goblin in "Amazing Spider-Man" sequel

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Chris Cooper has been cast as Norman Osborn - the Green Goblin's corporate alter ego - in Marc Webb's "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," a spokesman for Sony told TheWrap.

The character is one of Peter Parker's most infamous villains, and was portrayed by Willem Dafoe in Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man" trilogy. "Chronicle" star Dane DeHaan has already been cast as Harry Osborn, who is Norman's son and Parker's best friend.

Spider-Man, played by Andrew Garfield, will have his hands full in his next big-screen adventure, as it's been previously announced that he'll be facing off against Jamie Foxx ("Django Unchained") as Electro and Paul Giamatti ("Sideways") as the Rhino.

The teenage superhero will also be juggling multiple romantic relationships, too. Emma Stone is returning as Gwen Stacy, while Shailene Woodley ("The Descendants") is portraying Mary Jane Watson - a character previously played by Kirsten Dunst.

Production for the second film in the planned trilogy is already underway, with its release scheduled for May 2, 2014.

Cooper, an Academy Award winner in 2002 for best supporting actor in "Adaptation," was seen in theaters as the maniacal oil executive Tex Richman in 2011's "The Muppets," and will next appear in "August: Osage County."

(AP) ? A deeply divided Senate voted on Tuesday to confirm Republican Chuck Hagel to be the nation's next defense secretary, handing President Barack Obama's pick the top Pentagon job just days before billions of dollars in automatic, across-the-board budget cuts hit the military.

The vote was 58-41, with four Republicans joining the Democrats in backing the contentious choice. Hagel's only GOP support came from former colleagues Thad Cochran of Mississippi, Dick Shelby of Alabama and Mike Johanns of Nebraska ? all three had announced their support earlier ? and Rand Paul of Kentucky.

The vote came just hours after Republicans dropped their unprecedented delay of a Pentagon choice and allowed the nomination to move forward on a 71-27 vote.

Hagel, 66, a former two-term Nebraska senator and twice-wounded Vietnam combat veteran, succeeds Defense Secretary Leon Panetta. Hagel is expected to be sworn in at the Pentagon on Wednesday.

Obama welcomed the bipartisan Senate vote, although 41 Republicans opposed his nominee, and said in a statement that "we will have the defense secretary our nation needs and the leader our troops deserve."

The looked past the divisions and said he was grateful to Hagel "for reminding us that when it comes to our national defense, we are not Democrats or Republicans, we are Americans, and our greatest responsibility is the security of the American people."

Republicans had opposed their onetime colleague, casting him as unqualified for the job, hostile toward Israel and soft on Iran. The objections remained strong well after the vote.

"I continue to have serious questions about whether Chuck Hagel is up to the job of being our secretary of defense," Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said in a statement. "I hope, for the sake of our own national security, he exceeds expectations."

Hagel joins Obama's retooled second-term, national security team of Secretary of State John Kerry and CIA Director-designate John Brennan at a time of uncertainty for a military emerging from two wars and fighting worldwide terrorism with smaller, deficit-driven budgets.

Among his daunting challenges are deciding on troop levels in Afghanistan as the United States winds down its combat presence and dealing with $46 billion in budget cuts set to kick in on Friday. He also will have to work with lawmakers who spent weeks vilifying him.

Republicans insisted that Hagel was battered and bloodied after their repeated attacks during the protracted political fight.

"He will take office with the weakest support of any defense secretary in modern history, which will make him less effective on his job," said Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, the Senate GOP's No. 2 Republican.

Not so, said Democratic Sen. Jack Reed, who pointed out that Hagel now has the title and the fight is history.

"All have to work together for the interest of the country," said Reed, D-R.I.

The vote ended one of the most bitter fights over a Cabinet choice and former senator since 1989 when the Democratic-led Senate defeated newly elected President George H.W. Bush's nomination of Republican John Tower to be defense secretary.

In the course of the rancorous, seven-week nomination fight, Republicans, led by freshman Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas and Sen. Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma, insinuated that Hagel has a cozy relationship with Iran and received payments for speeches from extreme or radical groups. Those comments drew a rebuke from Democrats and some Republicans.

Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., the chairman of the Armed Services Committee, dismissed the "unfair innuendoes" against Hagel and called him an "outstanding American patriot" whose background as an enlisted soldier would send a positive message to the nation's servicemen and women.

Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., questioned how the confirmation process devolved into a character assassination in which Hagel was accused of "having secret ties with our enemies."

"I sincerely hope that the practice of challenging nominations with innuendo and inference, rather than facts and figures, was an aberration and not a roadmap," she said in a statement after the vote.

Obama got no points with the GOP for tapping the former two-term Republican senator. GOP lawmakers excoriated Hagel and cast him as a radical far out of the mainstream.

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., clashed with his onetime friend over his opposition to President George W. Bush's decision to send an extra 30,000 troops to Iraq in 2007 at a point when the war seemed in danger of being lost. Hagel, who voted to authorize military force in Iraq, later opposed the conflict, comparing it to Vietnam and arguing that it shifted the focus from Afghanistan.

McCain said several GOP lawmakers also had "a lot of ill will" toward the moderate Republican for his criticism of Bush and his backing for Democratic candidates.

Shortly after a White House meeting with Obama on immigration on Tuesday, McCain voted against his onetime friend and fellow Vietnam veteran.

Republicans also challenged Hagel about a May 2012 study that he co-authored for the advocacy group Global Zero, which called for an 80 percent reduction of U.S. nuclear weapons and the eventual elimination of all the world's nuclear arms.

In an echo of the 2012 presidential campaign, Hagel faced an onslaught of criticism by well-funded, Republican-leaning outside groups that labeled the former senator "anti-Israel" and pressured senators to oppose the nomination. The groups ran television and print ads criticizing Hagel.

Opponents were particularly incensed by Hagel's use of the term "Jewish lobby" to refer to pro-Israel groups. He apologized, saying he should have used another term and should not have said those groups have intimidated members of the Senate into favoring actions contrary to U.S. interests.

The nominee spent weeks reaching out to members of the Senate, meeting individually with lawmakers to address their concerns and seeking to reassure them about his policies.

Hagel's inconsistent performance during some eight hours of testimony during his confirmation hearing last month undercut his cause.

On Feb. 12, the Armed Services Committee approved the nomination on a party-line vote of 14-11. Two days later, a Democratic move to vote on the nomination fell a few votes short as Republicans insisted they needed more time to consider the pick.

Hagel's nomination also became entangled in Republican demands for more information about the deadly assault on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, last September. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans were killed in that attack.

Republicans allowed the nomination to move forward, with 18 Republicans joining the Democrats. Many had warned against the precedent of denying a president his Cabinet choices.

Paul's vote for Hagel came as something of a surprise. Moira Bagley, a spokeswoman for the senator, said that while he disagrees with Hagel on a number of issues, Paul believes a president should have some leeway in his political appointments.

Missing the vote was Democratic Sen. Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey.

Mexico arrests head of teacher's union on fraud charges

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexico arrested the head of the main teachers' union on fraud and embezzlement charges on Tuesday, striking out at a high-profile opponent of the new government's reform efforts and seeking to assert President Enrique Pena Nieto's authority.

Attorney General Jesus Murillo said Elba Esther Gordillo was arrested on suspicion of embezzling millions of dollars of union funds for private use, just a day after Pena Nieto signed a major overhaul of Mexican education into law.

Prosecutors accuse her of using intermediaries to move money to bank accounts in Switzerland and Liechtenstein, then back to the United States, where it was used to buy property for Gordillo in San Diego, works of art and plastic surgery.

"Clearly, we're facing a case in which the money of education workers has been misused illegally for the benefit of various people, including Elba Esther Gordillo," Murillo said. "Under this government nobody is above the law."

Gordillo, known as the "The Teacher" in Mexico, is known for her expensive clothes and lavish lifestyle. Critics have for years accused her of corruption.

She was detained at Toluca airport near the capital on Tuesday evening with three other people.

The 68-year-old has held a firm grip over the teachers' union, whose 1.3 million members make it one of the most powerful in Latin America.

She has long been viewed as an impediment to education reform in Mexico, and one of Pena Nieto's first acts in office was to push for a major revamp of the education system.

Gordillo's union fought against Pena Nieto's new education law, which aims to limit union control over hiring and teaching standards in a bid to improve school standards.

Pena Nieto also plans major changes to the Mexican tax system and state oil giant Pemex, a company with its own powerful union that has been accused of corruption.

Gordillo's arrest mirrors the removal of her predecessor Carlos Jonguitud 24 years ago by then-President Carlos Salinas, who took office pledging ambitious reforms, similar to the changes Pena Nieto has vowed since taking office on December 1.

Like Salinas, Pena Nieto belongs to the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), which ruled Mexico for most of the 20th century and returned to power last year after 12 years on the sidelines.

The blow to Gordillo harks back to the days when the PRI governed under a strong presidency that brooked no dissent.

Gordillo, was born into poverty in the south of the country and started working as a teacher at 15.

Widowed at 18, she moved to Mexico City, befriended the union leader of the day and began her ascent through the organization's ranks. After Salinas became president in 1988, teachers' protests broke out over wages, and he turned to Gordillo to bring order, naming her union boss.

Gordillo was a heavyweight of Mexican politics and at one point led the PRI in the lower house of Congress. She quickly thwarted government efforts to decentralize education, give parents a bigger role and weaken the union.

But she fell out with PRI leaders ahead of the 2006 presidential election and founded the small New Alliance Party.

Most first-time mothers wait until after 6 weeks postpartum to resume vaginal sex following childbirth and women who have an operative vaginal birth, caesarean section, perineal tear or episiotomy appear to wait longer, suggests a new study published today (27 February) in BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

The study, conducted by the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute, Australia, used data from the Maternal Health Study, a large prospective pregnancy cohort in which data were collected from self-administered questionnaires in early pregnancy and at 3, 6 and 12 months postpartum. The study used a sample of 1507 first-time mother to investigate the timing of resumption of vaginal sex and assess associations with methods of birth, perineal trauma and other obstetric and social factors.

Results show that 41% of women attempted vaginal sex by 6 weeks postpartum, 65% by 8 weeks, and 78% by 12 weeks, with this figure increasing to 94% by 6 months postpartum.

The study also found that sexual activity was resumed earlier than vaginal sex, with 53% resuming sexual activity by 6 weeks postpartum.

Furthermore, women aged 30-34 years were significantly less likely to have resumed vaginal sex compared with younger women, aged 18-24 years, by 6 weeks post partum (40% compared with 63%).

Women who had a caesarean section, a birth assisted with forceps and those who had an episiotomy or sutured tear were also less likely to have resumed vaginal sex by 6 weeks postpartum compared with women who had had a spontaneous vaginal birth and intact perineum. The results show that 45% of women who had a caesarean section, 32% who had a forceps-assisted birth, 32% who had an episiotomy and 35% who had a sutured tear had resumed vaginal sex by 6 weeks, compared with 60% who had a spontaneous vaginal birth with intact perineum.

The paper states that only around 10% of women having a first baby will achieve a vaginal birth with an intact perineum. Hence, for the vast majority of women and their partners, it is reasonable to anticipate a delay in resuming vaginal sex related to the events of labour and birth, say the authors.

Associate Professor Stephanie Brown from the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute, Victoria, Australia and lead author of the study said:

"The most important finding from the study is the wide time interval over which couples resume sex after childbirth. Most couples do not resume sex until after 6-8 weeks postpartum, and many delay much longer than this.

"This is useful information for couples to know before their baby is born, and may help reduce feelings of anxiety and guilt about not resuming sexual activity sooner."

Ellie McDonald, from the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute and co-author of the research said:

"The study findings provide evidence that both method of birth and degree of perineal trauma play a role in the resumption of sex after childbirth.

"It is possible that some couples delay resumption of sex until after the 6-week check-up on the grounds of waiting to check that everything is back to normal. This may explain the relatively large number of women that resume vaginal sex at 7-8 weeks postpartum."

John Thorp, BJOG Deputy-Editor-in-Chief added:

"It is very common for women and their partners to want information about when sexual activity may be safely and comfortably resumed, and what to expect in relation to the impact of childbirth on their relationship.

"Having reliable information to guide clinical practice can dispel common myths about what is normal during the postnatal period as well as enabling clinicians to tailor information to a woman's individual circumstances.

"This study provides important new evidence to guide information given to women and their partners about what to expect after childbirth. However, it is important to remember that these decisions are down to the individual couple and when it feels right for them."

Grand jury decides no charges against New Jersey's "Tan Mom"

(Reuters) - The case of the deeply bronzed New Jersey woman known as "Tan Mom" appears destined to fade away. A grand jury declined to indict her on child endangerment charges, a prosecutor said on Tuesday.

Patricia Krentcil was arrested in April 2012 after her then 5-year-old daughter showed up at school with a sunburn and officials accused her of taking the child into a tanning booth.

At the time, the blonde mother's chocolate-brown hue testified to many hours spent under the intense ultraviolet light of a tanning bed or out in the sun soaking up rays.

New Jersey is among several states that have adopted regulations prohibiting anyone age 14 or under from tanning with using ultraviolet devices because of the risk of skin cancer.

A grand jury considering the case against Krentcil, 44, of Nutley, New Jersey, decided not to indict her on charges of endangering the welfare of a child, the Essex County prosecutor's office said on Tuesday.

"We presented all the available evidence in the case to the grand jury," said Assistant Essex County Prosecutor Gina Iosim.

"The grand jurors voted not to indict Mrs. Krentcil. ... We respect their decision," Iosim said.

Krentcil's attorney Natalia Diaz hailed the panel's decision, noting that the mother of could have faced a prison term of up to 10 years had she been convicted of the charge.

"The case was just basically ridiculous," Diaz said. "It's almost like a witch hunt."

The child, now 6, is fair-skinned and showed up at school with a sunburn after spending time outside on a sunny day, not in a tanning booth, Diaz said.

Krentcil, who is also "very, very fair skinned," said she frequented tanning booths because she wanted to look "nice and dark," Diaz said. But that is all in the past.

"She no longer tans like that," Diaz said.

How To Keep Your Small Business - Business Insider

Concur

When you empower your employees with an expense account, you trust that they won't blow a few thousand bucks on a meal at Le Bec Fin.

Still, even a business with the world's most ethical employees needs to keep expense spending under control. To do that, you need to make sure everyone is on the same page by formulating an expense policy.

Why Do You Need An Expense Policy?

People want to do the right thing when it comes to filing expenses, but sometimes they don?t know what the right thing is. A clear, unambiguous expense policy helps prevent frustration, mistakes, and even the risk of expense fiddling or fraud.

Where To Start

You can find good examples online. Concur's expense policy template?(free to download) describes the structure of a best-practice expenses policy and explains what each section should cover and includes sample language.

Here are useful guidelines:

  1. Ditch the jargon. Remind people to use common sense. Double-check that your policy is easy to read and not bogged down in corporate-speak. The easier a policy is to understand, the easier it is for your employees to adhere to it.
  2. Make it fair. No one should have to pay out of pocket if they spend sensibly.
  3. Invite participation. Ask team members to participate in the process. If they help develop the expense policy, they'll see why it's necessary?and they'll be more likely to adhere to the rules and encourage others to do the same.
  4. Use sensible, localized rules. Sometimes a one-size-fits-all policy won?t work across an entire company and you need to adapt to local requirements, such as higher hotel costs in more expensive cities. One good solution is a table of acceptable regional rates.

Britain's most senior Roman Catholic cleric resigns

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's most senior Roman Catholic cleric resigned on Monday the day after he rejected allegations that he had behaved in an "inappropriate" way with other priests.

"The Holy Father has now decided that my resignation will take effect today, 25 February 2013," Cardinal Keith O'Brien, who had been expected to take part in the conclave to choose the next pope, said in a statement.

O'Brien, who is known for outspoken views on homosexuality, had been reported to the Vatican over allegations of inappropriate behavior stretching back 30 years, according to the Observer newspaper.

O'Brien, the archbishop of St. Andrews and Edinburgh, had rejected the claims.
